Sažetak
Although O. von Kutchera-Woborsky has, more than a century ago, considered the relief of St. John the Evangelist the imitation of an Antique monument and associated it with the work of Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino and Andrea Alessi, in the publications of the two archaeologists, N. Cambi and D. Maršić, it has been interpreted as a genuine Roman funerary monument that was significantly remodelled in the second half of the 15th century. Through the critical overview of their statements and thorough formal and stylistic analysis of the relief, in this paper we aim to prove that this relief was not a relief- palimpsest. Instead, as it was stated a long time ago, it is a unique artwork inspired by Antiquity, made under the strong influence of Niccolò Fiorentino at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century. As this relief does not show any similarities with the stone altarpieces of Andrea Alessi made in 80s and 90s of the 15th century for the churches on the Marjan hill, we propose that its author was probably one of the unknown sculptors from Split (Marin Vladić?), who has made a series of reliefs built in the northern town walls around the year 1500.
