Sažetak
S paper will provide an analysis of selected Latin diplomatic reports written by Antun Vrančić (1551–1617) and Franciscus Zay (1498–1570), Habsburg envoys who negotiated a peace-treaty with Sultans Süleyman I and Selim II and Grand Viziers Rüstem Pasha and Mehmed Pasha Sokolović between 1553 and 1568. Following theoretical presumptions of historical praxeology, diplomatic negotiations between the most powerful European and non-European polities in the 16th century will be interpreted as a complex socio-political practice which involves various categories of human actors, material actants and symbolic meanings. In addition to this, by scrutinizing representations, functions and meanings of gift- giving practices and material exchanges described in the Habsburg diplomatic reports and in the calculation of the missions’ expenditures, it will also be argued that the practice of granting money and material goods are not only indisputable marks of Ottoman imperial corruption but also signal diplomatic politeness and generosity of donors as well as dignity and prestige of recipients. Therefore, it can be concluded that both historical praxeology and material culture of diplomacy could provide valuable incentives for the further development of new diplomatic history
