Sažetak
The city of Rijeka (Fiume – “River”), located at the confluence of a short strong river entering the Adriatic, forms a natural port with convenient access inlands. Such position made its history extremely dynamic, so the port played an important role in major modern European conflicts and it was often object of compromise of imperial powers. Thus dozens of city flags used to symbolize the city in the last 200 years – and in each period a number of controversies and vivid discussion to what the appropriate flag should be. While the city painfully succeeded to establish its own autochthonous flag based on its mediaeval coat of arms at the end of the 19th century, replacing the previous unusual practice of flying the particular national flag defaced with the city arms, it took the next century to preserve that flag from various ideologies trying to change it, both national (Austria, Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia, Croatia) and socio-political (fascism, communism). At one point the city flag even shorty achieved status of the flag of an international subject, the Free State. This struggle for its own flag is still ongoing currently being probably the most controversial vexillological issue in Croatia.
