Sažetak
Centuries long resistance to exceptionally strong assimilation forces in a multi-ethnic environment has been an intriguing historical and sociological determinant of Croats in Slovakia, which can be better understood when the whole historical context is considered and assimilation forces on one side and factors that aided the preservation of ethnic consciousness on the other are juxtaposed. Emphasis is placed on questioning key factors that affected the preservation of the Croatian language and identity. These factors changed through time – some by passing through various metamorphoses/transformations themselves, others disappearing or newly emerging. In any case, we can observe the historical continuity of the incessant processes of revitalization and redefinition of the identity of Croats in Slovakia, from autarkic, closed and ethnically homogenous societies, to modern networked informational society.
