Sažetak
The definition of architecture as the art of organizing interior spaces underestimates the significance of urban spaces which can, as spatial experience, be extended to open public spaces of a city among which the squares play a distinguished role. The unique relation between the open space represented by the void of a square and the solids of surrounding buildings can, through the creative efforts of the planner, create an emotional experience comparable to that of an artwork. The square Trg Slobode in Osijek dates back to the 1960s. It is the result of reconstruction of an urban block in the city centre by transforming the inter-block space into an open public space (author Miščević R.). The square Trg Slobode is actually a sequence of three squares situated along a pedestrian area. This phenomenon is in the urbanism theory recognized as „grouped squares“. The physical structures of Trg Slobode, in our opinion, mediate between characteristic structures of a traditional city and the structures re- evaluated through modern urbanism as defined at the eighth CIAM symposium (Hoddesdon, 1951.) on the topic „The core of the city“. An analysis of the formal dimension and context will answer the following question: To which extent did the author manage to make the structure of the square Trg Slobode a part of the urban context and identity. Within this analysis, the formal characteristics of Trg Slobode which are important for the experience of emotions of space will also be investigated. This formal analysis will point out the elements (space, mass, surface) and relations (proximity, continuity, closure), with the relations between the elements being more important than the elements themselves. The analysis will also include a review of the success/failure of recent interventions on Trg Slobode.
