Sažetak
In this paper I will present my ongoing research regarding technology and music, more precisely recording technology and recorded material. Focus is on the period from 1927 until the end of the 1950s, thus covering the era of shellac records produced by three record companies based in Zagreb: Edison Bell Penkala, Elektroton and Jugoton. On several selected examples from different periods, I will present technological possibilities of recording as well as innovations, production possibilities and aspirations and I will try to connect them to musical sound. Questions will be addressed whether there were differences (and whether we can hear them) in the way of recording popular, traditional and so- called classical music? How much could the recordings be influenced by the production and what did the production mean in Croatia at that time? That is, I will try to answer the question of the connection between technological interventions and social music practice. Furthermore, I will try to find out how much impact did the recorded sound have on the musical performance later? This presentation is part of the four-year project The record industry in Croatia from 1927 to the end of the 1950s (fully supported by the Croatian Science Foundation).
