Sažetak
This poster presentation is a result of still ongoing research that includes collecting, arranging, preserving, and interpreting the information on gramophone records and supporting material connected to the early Croatian record industry. The aim of the presentation is to systematize and analyze a sonic historical moment in the wider context of the prewar and WWII record industry that existed within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (1918-1941 ; 1929 renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) and its successor, the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945). The presentation focuses on 78 rpm gramophone records produced on Croatian territory from 1927 to 1945, and accordingly, on the two record companies that operated in the short 18-year period. The research is a part of a larger doctoral project on the Croatian record industry that studies the period through 1960. The trajectory of the research moves backward in time. Hence, after dealing with 78 rpms produced in Yugoslavia by Jugoton after WWII, my focus shifts to two older companies that operated in Zagreb – Elektroton and Edison Bell Penkala. The goal is to systematize and interpret their production and marketing decisions by examining the different genres and ethnic groups represented in the recordings, as well as recorded repertoire and musicians, displaying various graphs on their production and the years of publication as precisely as possible. In addition, I intend to provide a deeper interpretive analysis for understanding life, social attitudes, and perspectives on various identities that were present in Croatia and other ex-Yugoslav countries in the context of political oppositions during this turbulent period. Bearing in mind the ability of music to reflect on the up- to-date events, I hope to point out alternative historical stories that will allow us a better understanding of the historical complexity of Croatia and neighboring countries.
