Sažetak
Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract of unknown cause. Among inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and undetermined colitis have been diagnosed in only 10% of patients. There are few aims of this research: 1. To point out the importance of proper nutrition both before diagnosis is made for the purpose of prevention and after diagnosis is made ; 2. To show the number of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in northern Croatia, and compare the results with the research carried out for eastern Croatia ; and 3. To see the nutritional habits of the ill before and after the diagnosis has been made, how and whether the nutrition has changed and to examine which foods are the hardest tolerated by participants. The survey was conducted through an online questionnaire from May 2020 to September 2020. A total of 93 participants in both sexes, mostly females (71%), participated in the survey. On average, participants were between 31 and 40 years of age (36.6%) and came from four counties, Koprivnicko-Krizevacke County (31.2%), Krapinsko- zagorske County (18.3%), Međimurske County (23.7%) and Varazdinske County (26.9%). Out of the total number of participants, 50.5% said they had Crohn’s disease, while 49.5% said they had ulcerative colitis. All collected data were analyzed in the SPSS 23 statistical program from IBM. The data are presented in descriptive terms. Among the participants from northern Croatia, we see that they have improved their eating habits in the form of the consumption of a larger number of smaller meals, the consumption of probiotics and prebiotics as well as contemporaries in relation to the illness, but the perception of eating habits in the context of avoiding unwanted food is missing. When we talk about marital status and the level of education, there is no statistically significant difference in the consumption of meals and the quality of the meals, and the foods that promote symptoms of the disease are individual for each person. Proper diets and dietotherapy with adherence to prescribed therapy are essential factors for achieving remission and eliminating symptoms of IBD. Individuals with IBD need individual approach and gradual removal of symptomatic enhancers. For participants from the North of Croatia we see that knowledge is lacking in the context of avoiding unwanted foods, so it would be necessary to conduct education at all levels.
