Sažetak
The first classical swine fever (CSF) epidemic during the post CSF preventive vaccination period, occured in Croatia in July 2006. Total of 91 outbreaks of CSF were confirmed in four counties (78 in Vukovar-srijem (VS) 9 in Osijek-baranja (OB), 3 in Sisak-moslavina (SM) and 1 in Karlovac (KA)) from July 19, 2006 by the end of the year when final CSF serological screening proved no evidence of CSF virus (CSFV) circulation in the affected areas. 92% of all outbreaks in VS county were clustered within the settlement of Borovo. During the course of CSF epidemic in Borovo 72 (11%) of pig farms were infected and 2185 pigs were culled in order to eradicate CSF infection. No evidence of CSFV circulation was found on 556 (89%) farms and 5351 pigs on CSF non-infected farms survived during the epidemic in Borovo. Most probably an index case in Borovo was associated with pigs illegally introduced from the neighbouring country to the Danube river island called „ Borovska ada “. PiРs illeРally introduced on tСe island were mixing with local pigs kept on the location. From this location pigs were moved to a pig farm within the settlement for the purpose of production and trade. The epidemic was characterized with a long period of silent spread. Long distance spread to other counties is explained by movement of pigs within the incubation period, durinР tСe “ silent spread period ”. Comp lex structure of direct and indirect contacts including contacts of pigs mixing on the river island, boar stud commonly used for natural insemination in the settlement of Borovo, lack of biosecurity implemented by professionals visiting a pig farm, most probably contributed to spread of CSFV within the settlement. Stamping out measures to eradicate CSF infection were implemented at farm level. Long tail of CSF epidemic in 2006 may be associated with failures to recognise clinical disease as well as lack of complete implementation of post outbreak surveillance on small pig farms in the affected area
