Sažetak
This paper is the first draft of the first synthesis on Carolingian Istria, made possible after exactly thirty years of a beautiful collaboration with Ivan Matejčić, to whom I dedicate it. New questions have been raised, new problems opened through mutual excavations of key sites of the period. The questions are centred around the issues of establishment of the Frankish rule, diplomatic activities, organization of the territory, transfer of new forms and functions in architecture – all of it created a totally new vision of the Istrian monumental landscape in the early Middle Ages.
