Sažetak
Karst areas represent important reservoirs of potable water. This groundwater is very vulnerable due to external impacts and pollution. Vulnerability mapping methods applied in Slovakia try to take also the soil cover of karst regions as a possible pollution barrier into account. However, much more information about the permeability and retention properties of soils is necessary than usually known by hydrogeologists. An interdisciplinary research of karst soils was carried out in co-operation between Slovak and Croatian scientists. Soil-scientific, mineralogical, engineering-geological and hydrogeological methods have been applied at 12 selected sites, located on Istria peninsula (Croatia) and in the Brezovske Karpaty Mts. and the Slovensky kras Mts. (Slovakia), contaminated and uncontaminated sites were compared. The co-operation brought a very detailed description and classification of the soils. Both, macro-morphological and micro-morphological investigations were carried out. Mineralogical studies showed the possible sorbents in the soil, but also significant differences in the clay mineral composition of Slovak and Istrian soils. Different permeability test proved that under circumstances, saturated hydraulic conductivity may be very low due to swelling clay minerals or due to high clay fraction content. Retention and mobility of retained pollutants in soils was tested by diffusion tests and sequential extraction procedure.
