Sažetak
The paper deals with politically motivated and controlled shift in the meaning of terms denoting imprisoned persons, the process in which a lexical archaism 'uznik' (prisoner) has been systematically brought back into active vocabulary, and semantically re-defined by some social groups and their allies in 1990s political elite, so that its poetic associations and emotional overtones should inspire the human sympathy and, consenquently, the political solidarity with Croats prosecuted by ICTY in the Hague. However, the majority of the general public and the media - both quality and boulevard press - happenned not to know neither the original meaning of the archaism, extinct from the public discourse by the end of the 19th century, nor the added connotations, and the lexeme, intended to be disseminated as an implicit value-ideological identifier, became a source for many misunderstandings and even grotesque uses.
