Sažetak
Due to a rapid social and economic changes, wedding rituals in Zagreb area are not elaborated as before. However, in their usual two-part macrostructure, considerable emphasis is placed on the second, celebratory part whose structure is highly dependent on music. Selection of music is thus, following the selection of a venue, the most important factor addressed by couples while organizing weddings, thereby increasing the earning possibilities for musicians. In this market niche which is continually growing by virtue of professionalized music ensembles, we are witnessing a growing presence of female members as opposed to the earlier exclusively male ensembles. In spite of that, their position is still marginal: they are usually entrusted with the role of a singer, regarded as the most feminine role of musicking. It is therefore rather challenging for them to be recognized as professionals and legitimate colleagues, evidenced further by the general view of singers as separated members of ensemble. Relying on the fieldwork conducted so far and through the lens of their professional and private lives, I will examine narratives and experiences of women musicians in the context of weddings, as well as the predominant discourses concerning them. Does their professional life affect their everyday to such a degree or is it merely a distraction from genuine discrimination? How are they challenging their subordinate position and to what extent are they compelled to adapt to the prevailing masculine social networks and working environment? Which social processes are producing and reinforcing gender-based marginalizations in this setting and how is this connected to the stereotypical roles in society at large?
