Background: Since 199·t the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance once a year invites tenders for hospital drug supplyPlasmadcrivauvcs. as important and expensive medical treatment, are also included. Selection is made among drugs registered i nCroatia concerning quality and once ufthe drug offered for tender Study Design The main purpose in this study was to evaluate influence of the Drug List on availability of plasma derivatives in circumstances of limited amount of money for health care. Influence of the lower prices achieved through tender, at the main plasma derivatives consumption (F VIII, albumin and IVlg) during the period 1994-1998 was studied. Results: Consumption of plasma derivatives in Croatia in 1997 was 4-10 kg of albumin (89kg/IO' inhabitants), 13 kg of IVlg (2, 7 kg/IO' inhabitants) and 5 mill of FVIII (1.0-1IU/ inhabitants) Price changes during the period 1991- 1998 is presented in a table. Commentary: The economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals is becoming an important element in decisions on health care resource allocation Our experience confirms that Drug List. formed on tender basis, cut the prices of the human blood derivatives. Thus, in conditions of limited amount of money for the healthcare system. availability of plasma derivatives is increased.
