Esotericism in Yugoslavia, Vladimir Dodig Trokut
Sažetak
From the late 1960s onwards, by absorbing a wide range of esoteric ideas and (re)constructing practices, as the organisers of this session have pointed out, Eastern European and Soviet New Agers were directly or indirectly involved in the social and political processes. The artistic work of Vladimir Dodig Trokut (1949-2018) should also be considered within this context, having originated within the hippie scene of Split in the mid-1960s and then going on to promote the ideas of the New Age movement across the landscape of Yugoslav reality. He would continue to act subversively through his esoteric, alchemical art and shamanic practice even in the period of transition, the era nationalist Croatia, up until his unexpected death in 2018. Spanning two different social and political systems in Yugoslavia and Post-socialist Croatia, subversiveness was indeed the overall feature of the artistic work of Vladimir Dodig Trokut. Marijan Grakalić, author of the book of the encyclopedic format Spirituality of the New Age, with the subtitle historiosophical monograph (1995), was among the first to write an obituary about Vladimir Dodig Trokut (1949-2018). In memoriam was titled "The Departure of the Zagreb Mystic” where Marijan Grakalić designated Vladimir Dodig Trokut as a tarot translator, a master of I Jing and an specialist of the Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema by Aleister Crowley.
