Sažetak
Roads have become major drivers of environmental change, but invertebrates are still neglected in road management due to a lack of research. This study aims to assess the effects of motorway proximity and road-influenced environmental factors on spatial dynamics of two insect indicator groups, orthopterans and ground beetles, adopting both species-based and trait-based approaches to community assembly. Sampling was performed at five distances from a motorway: 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 m, within a grassland habitat in Lika region (Croatia), using pitfall traps and sweep-net. This research provides the first evidence that major roads reduce taxonomic diversity of orthopterans with low-frequency acoustic signals, while increasing functional diversity of plant-dwelling orthopterans and ground beetles. Motorway proximity affects both groups primarily through changes in vegetation structure, combined with the effects of traffic noise on orthopterans, causing shifts in functional traits related to body size, feeding guild, lifestyle, habitat and moisture preferences.
