The invention refers to 4-oxo-azetidin-2-sulphonic acids and their salts with the general formula I where the radicals have the following meaning: R1 stands for H, halogen ; R2 stands for H, halogen ; X stands for H, alkaline or alkaline earth element, such as Na ; quaternary ammonium group, such as tetrabutylammonium ; R4 stands for H, (alkyl, aralkyl or aryl) oxycarbonyl-2-methyl-propenyl group, such as (CH3)2C=C-CO-OCH2-C6H5. The invention also refers to their preparation. The gained substances are used as intermediates in the syntheses of beta-lactam antibiotics or as components with their own anti-microbic or synergic action.
