Sažetak
Some of the potential causes proposed to explain the reported increase of haematological malignancies in childhood during or after the war period in several countries are depleted uranium, chemical plant damage and "war mixing" theory. The aim of this study was to investigate if any of these suspected risk factors led to significant increase of any type of haematological malignancy in childhood in Croatia as a result of the war-related events. The authors analyzed the data reported by the Cancer Registry of Croatia during the 15-year pre-war period (1976-1990), war period (1991-1995) and post-war period (1996-1998). The analysis of time trends of the incidence curves for specific haematological malignancies showed no detectable increase in incidence of Morbus Hodgkin, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, lymphatic leukemia and myeloid leukemia in any of the analyzed 5-year age groups (0-4 years, 5-9 years and 10-14 years). The authors conclude that, contrary to the experience reported in some other countries, none of the suspected war-related risk factors significantly influenced the incidence of haematological malignancies in childhood in Croatia.
