Sažetak
The basic national symbols of each state, since the beginning of the concept of nation and national awareness, are the flag, coat of arms, and anthem. The term anthem comes from the Greek language and means a song, a hymn, and it can be defined as a representative song, most often a state song, which is sung or played on solemn and official occasions. It is usually a patriotic song that glorifies the history, traditions, and efforts of an individual nation. Furthermore, it can be officially acknowledged as the national anthem or generally accepted by the people as a ceremonial song (https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himna ). The first anthem was written in the Netherlands in the 16th century. There is evidence that the Japanese anthem is even older than the Dutch, yet it obtained its musical version only just in the 20th century. Most anthems, including the Turkish and Croatian anthems, were composed in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the period of nation-building. The subjects of this paper are two seemingly different but, in many ways, similar anthems of two friendly countries: The Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Croatia.
