Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to offer guidelines for researching language maintenance within the generation of descendants of Dalmatians on New Zealand’s North Island. In order to give insight into the terminological diversity regarding the labelling of heritage speakers, this paper will present researches of the language of Croatian emigrants in anglophone countries overseas to date. Afterwards the paper will present the linguistic behaviour of the descendants whose ancestors had emigrated from places in Central Dalmatia surrounding towns Makarska and Vrgorac at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and immigrated to New Zealand. Among these Podgora stands out as the place from where many men, and later women, have emigrated during the course of several decades. They inhabited the area around the city of Auckland, and in their new environment they were without institutionalised learning (or knowledge) of their birth country’s standard language, (mostly) semi-literate or illiterate with barely a few completed grades of primary school (Čizmić 1981 ; Barbieri 1990 ; Stoffel 1994 ; Božić Vrbančić 2018). They have introduced their birth place’s idiom into the New Zealand area and they possess only their local speech which is an inseparable (and maybe the most important) part of their collective identity in their new life. In researches of the emigrants’ language and speech to date, not enough attention has been given to the introduced language (speech) which is why three linguistic research approaches for observing heritage language of the Podgora descendants are suggested: (a) geolinguistic, (b) sociolinguistic and (c) dialectological. Through these three approaches the framework and guidelines for presenting today’s level of heritage language maintenance are set ; not only among the Podgora descendants in New Zealand but also in other areas where it is possible to observe the language of ancestors if, of course, the vital community where the language still lives is preserved as well.
