Sažetak
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine isthmus cleaning efficacy of novel irrigation devices for activation of sodium hypochlorite. Materials and methods: We tested three different means of irrigation in an epoxy model containing two canals and a simulated isthmus filled with colored gelatin: (1) sonic activation using EDDY (VDW, Munich, Germany), (2) passive ultrasonic activation (IrriSafe, Satelec, Acteon Group Ltd., Norwich, UK) driven by a piezoelectric ultrasonic device (Satelec) set at 1/3 of full power, (3) the Er:YAG laser with a wavelength of 2940 nm (Lightwalker AT, Fotona, Ljubljana, Slovenia) used according to the following protocol: 10 mJ per pulse, 15 Hz, pulse duration 50 μs. As a control, 2.5 mL of irrigant was administered using a 30- gauge side vented stainless-steel needle. Areas of removed gelatin from the isthmus calculated in ImageJ (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) were used as the outcome (n=3). Results: All three means of hypochlorite activation were significantly (p < 0.05) more effective in the removal of gelatin from the isthmus comparing to syringe irrigation. Moreover, EDDY seems to be less effective than passive ultrasonic and laser. Conclusion: All three means of hypochlorite activation were significantly more effective in the removal of gelatin from the isthmus comparing to syringe irrigation.
