Sažetak
In the first Preface to the Ency. Hegel boasts having established a system whose method he believes to be “the single true” one, insofar as it is “identical with the content” With regard to religion as object of philosophical reflection, this identity proves to be the strength and ultimate weakness of Hegel’s encyclopedic system, as Franz von Baader (1765-1841) recognized. Both thinkers agree on the limits of rational knowledge of the divinity: human experience cannot be illuminated in its entirety by discursive reasoning and rational reflection. Knowledge is of the finite ; the infinite precedes finite being as its source before “being and knowledge” . This supersensible ‘remainder’ manifests itself in the deepest enigmas of human existence: the opposition of necessity and freedom, knowledge and faith, good and evil, in life, finitude and death. Hegel believed nevertheless the content of revealed religion to be knowable (cf. Encycl. § 5). Following Kant, Hegel and the thinkers of German Idealism and Romantic philosophy took up the challenge of attempting to reconcile science and religion, philosophy and theology, faith and reason. Franz von Baader, through his revival of Jacob Böhme’s thought, attempted to bring home to Hegel his idea of a “religious philosophy” and “speculative theology”, what he called a "natural philosophy of Christianity". Baader was convinced of the rational irreducibility but reasonable penetrability of certain core doctrines of Christian religion, such that of Creation and Incarnation, The attempt to illuminate the conflict of faith and reason, nature and reason was at the heart of Baader’s personal encounter with Hegel whom he met on the occasion of his journey to Russia to found an academy for the purpose of reconciling science, politics, and religion. Baader believes that neither Schelling nor Hegel surmounted the weakness of Fichtean Idealism, which consists in its confounding of the divine with unintelligent nature, on the one hand, and with spirit/intellect, on the other. This paper examines Baader’s critique of Hegel’s position, as well as Hegel’s application of his method to the philosophical interpretation of central doctrines of the Christian faith, with an eye to estimating the adequacy or inadequacy of Hegel’s approach to a philosophical incorporation of religious doctrine through the concrete concept.
