Sažetak
Research has shown that parents of childrent with disabilities experience more stress than those with typically developing children. Reasons for stress are various: coping with unexpected life situation, coping with the diagnosis, learning about the diagnosis, sometimes even postponed diagnosis, providing appropriate support, environment and many others. Parents of children with disabilities, compared to parents of typically developing children have impared health, wellbeing and family relationships. Research commonly examine differences in experiencing stress between mothers and fathers or are focused on mothers. Results indicate that mothers experience more stress but sociodemografic factors and insufficient knowledge about diagnosis are key stress indicators for fathers. In dealing with stress a key role is played by the mechanisms according to individual caracteristics. Given the insufficient knowledge of stress in fathers of children with disabilities and mechanism they use to cope, the goal of this study is to identify stressors for fathers of children with disabilities and coping mechanisms. Research was conducted using semistructured interview with fathers of children with disabilities (N=8). Results indicate that fathers experience stress and their role as family support system. Most of them emphasize the importance of problem focused coping mechanism but also mention other that help them keep wellbeing.
