Sažetak
The widespread use of the Internet has changed the way people interact and form social and intimate relationships. The youth of today is especially keen on using online sites for meeting people, as well as for finding relationship partners. Researchs show that there are various motives for why people choose to partake in online dating, including having fun, finding sexual partners, forming serious romantic relationship, etc. Likewise, there are some characteristics of individuals which are important for participating in online dating, such as social interaction anxiety and self-disclosure. For individuals with marked social interaction anxiety, the Internet may open avenues of communication and provide an outlet through which relationships can be formed. Also, self-disclosing personal information leads to an increase in intimacy, and only after liking and trust are established can an (online) relationship be formed. However, research is scarce on the differences in motives for online dating in individuals with different levels of the two said characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to explore online dating experience and whether there is a difference in the two measured motives (to have fun and find sexual partners and to form serious relationship) for online dating and perception of success in online dating between individuals who are low and high on social interaction anxiety and self-disclosure, respectively. The data shown in this paper was gathered in an online research which is still in progress, on the sample of 119 students (M=22 years ; SD=2, 48). The preliminary results reveal interesting findings regarding online dating experience (who made “the first move”, the duration of relationship, etc.). Also, they reveal significant differences in motives in individuals with different levels of social interaction anxiety – those that are anxious are more motivated by the need to an establish intimate, serious relationship via the Internet in comparison to less anxious ones. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
