Sažetak
The paper analyses the formation of female identities in Croatian writer Marija Jurić Zagorka's historical novel Jadranka. The paper interprets representations of different models of heterosexual love and maternal love as important components in shaping female identities, explores the shaping of caregiver figures (godmother, nanny) as surrogate mothers, and analyses the topic of female charity work. It also considers subordination and/or determination of female identities by class, economic, and national- political relations, and analyses the ideological dichotomy between the (re)affirmation of the traditional, patriarchal notion of femininity and subversive, gender-emancipatory impulses embedded in the formation of female identities
