Sažetak
Home is one of the universal social concepts that has many meanings and layers ; and finding, adjusting and settling into any home, let alone a perfect one, is almost a utopian process. The relationship between everyday life and home is dependent on many socioeconomic, cultural, technological and political conditions that direct and/or dictate daily rhythms and home environments. The contemporary global situation caused by the pandemic transformed the symbolism of home as the epitome of freedom and privacy, loosened the already blurry boundaries in work–life balance, intensified feelings of loneliness and frustration and escalated virtual lives to a new level. In other words, being at home became an imperative of everyday life. Bearing this in mind, the authors analyse how a set of specific disastrous events such as the pandemic and an earthquake changed the everyday life of city dwellers. Starting from the premise that being at home provides ontological security that is experienced—among other things—through daily routines and the spatial context of home, our research is focused on the transformation of daily routines and spatial use of homes since the pandemic started. Furthermore, the simultaneity of the two disasters (one global and one local) that imply opposite behaviours is expected to be especially challenging: the pandemic inflicted home lockdowns while the earthquakes left many without homes and others in constant fear of being at home. Research was conducted in Zagreb using qualitative research methodology. The results indicated that everyday life at home was less stricken by the earthquakes, whereas the lockdown during the pandemic was more of a challenge especially for non-single households. According to respondents, their new daily routines also brought many positive changes, such as connecting with family and spending time in nature. However, in the spatial context of home, many highlighted the importance and need for larger outdoor spaces and more defined indoor spaces that would provide the needed privacy and feeling of freedom.
