Sažetak
The papers first stresses the importance and notion of the fracture mechanics, dealing thereafter with the fracture ductility as one of the basic indicators of quality and reliability of rails in operation. The paper also gives a survey of standards for determining the characteristics of the fracture nmechanics, with a particular emphasis on standard ASTM E 399-83 with a critical review. An outline of the test results of steel for rails in the world is given, as well as the test results of domestic rails and the calculation of critical dimensions of errors in diagrams, by the application of the "phylosophy of permitted damages" and ranges of the resulting values of rail steel dynamic strength in relation to the conventional stresses and tensile strength.
