Sažetak
Seafaring is one of the most demanding professions and career preparedness might foster an individual’s capacity to be resilient and adaptable when facing unexpected career events. Previous studies in general population suggest that career preparedness contributes to a range of positive outcomes in organizational context: individuals with higher levels of career preparedness are more satisfied with their career choice and more committed to job and organization. Moreover, career preparedness has a beneficial effect on subjective well-being, namely life satisfaction, self-actualisation and social adaptation. However, career preparedness and its antecedents have rarely been studied in a sample of seafarers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the individual contributions of personality traits and career adaptability in the explanation of future seafarers’ career preparedness while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. The sample involved 626 future seafarers from seven maritime high schools (N=358) and two maritime faculties (N=268). The measures included sociodemographic questionnaire, HEXACO personality inventory, Career Adapt-Ability Scale (CAAS) and Student Career Construction Inventory (SCCI). The results of hierarchical regression analysis indicate that three dimensions of career adaptability have a significant role in the explanation of career preparedness. Participants who are more concerned about their professional future, more confident and possess higher levels of control – are more determined and organized in performing professional development tasks and work transitions, i.e. they are more career prepared. Although personality traits were significantly correlated with career preparedness at bivariate level, they did not contribute significantly to the explanation of career preparedness. Practical implications and theoretical contributions are discussed.
