Sažetak
This book consists of six discussions which study the problems of Croatian-Jewish and Serbian-Jewish relations in Croatia in the latter half of the nineteenth and turn of the twentieth century. Five of these discussions were previously published in Croatian scientific publications, and one for the first time in this book, “Jews in ‘Sloboda, ’ the Newspaper of the Party of Rights, 1878-1886.” Croatian-Jewish relations have not been the topic of research in our historiography as often as the problematics and complexity of these relations demand. Indeed, we have had no systemic research of this relationship over the span of our history. Previous research by individual sources (newspapers of various political and religious affiliations, the works and thoughts of individuals who contributed to the formation of Croatian national identity, and to literary and religious works), were not considered an acute necessity. The period of the nineteenth century, particularly the latter half, “of the protracted nineteenth century” is of special importance. That is the setting in which anti-Semitic parties are forming in European countries, and movements are emerging which form the basis for understanding events in the first half of the twentieth century. These discussions research Croatian-Jewish relations primarily from source material found in newspapers and religious and political publications. The author of this text did not dig into the history of Jews in Croatia directly, but considers that the topics discussed here in, are essential for a clearer picture of Croatian-Jewish relations. In addition to Croatian-Jewish relations, the book also deals with Serbian-Jewish relations in Croatia, to which one study is dedicated. The topic, ”Židovi u srpskom tisku u Hrvatskoj potkraj 19. stoljeća” [Jews in Serbian Publications in Croatia Towards the End of the 19th Century], is a part of that whole, depicting the picture of Croatian-Jewish relations and Serbian -Jewish relations in Croatia.
