Sažetak
In this paper, I will focus on certain examples of rebellion and acceptance in Croatian Glagolitic Culture in the Middle Ages, beginning with first half of the 10th century. I intends to show that these examples reflect the unique historical picture on Croatian Glagolitic culture. The use of Croatian Glagolithic and Old Church Slavonic raised the specter of rebellion in early medieval Croatia, as was seen during two historic synods held in Spilt in 925 and 928 as well as in letters of Pope John X addressed to Croatian King Tomislav and Mihael, the Duke of Hum, in which the use of Slavic liturgy was condemned as heretical. Several sources point to the continued tension between the use of Latin versus the vernacular and between the reformist and anti-reformist movements in Croatia during the 10th and 11th centuries, including on the Island of Krk. Finally, that resulted in discontent which Archdeacon Thomas of Split (1200/1201–1268) picturesquely describes in his work Historia Salonitana through a narrative about Vulfo (Wolf) and Cededa: “In the time of Archbishop Lawrence there was a controversy in the kingdom of Dalmatia and Croatia arising from accursed schism. For in the time of Pope Alexander and of John, Lawrence's predecessor, a formal synod had been convened of all the prelates of Dalmatia and Croatia by Maynard, formerly abbot of Pomposa and afterwards cardinal bishop, at which many articles were drawn up. Among these it was decreed and established that no one in future should presume to celebrate the divine mysteries in the Slavic tongue, but only in Latin and Greek, and that neither should anyone of that language be elevated to holy orders. For they said that a certain heretic called Metho¬dius had devised a Gothic alphabet, and he perniciously wrote a great deal of falsehood against the teachings of the Catholic faith in that same Slavic language. On account of this, he is said to have been condemned by divine judgement to a swift end.” The status of Old Slavic liturgy was hence positively resolved only in the 13th century by two important decisions – the papal approval of glagolitism to the Senj bishop Philippus in 1248 and Krk bishop Fructuosus in 1252 for Benedictines in Omišalj (on the island of Krk) – which definitely marks a new period in the life of the church, but also the written culture among Croats. This paper will examine these controversies, concluding with the ultimate acceptance of Church Slavonic and Glagolithic by the 13th century and the flowering of the use of Glagolithic in later centuries.
