Sažetak
In the introduction, the concise information about the Bienenstocks, a trading family, is shortly presented, and the role of the Jewish people and their significance for the economy of Osijek in the first decades of the 20th century is described. Further on, in the main part of the paper, the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia and the suffering of Jews due to the racial injustice and other discriminating legal provisions is discussed. A special emphasis is put on the significance of Mother M. Amadeja, the then deputy provincial superior of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross in Đakovo. She risked her life to save Jews during the course of World War II. A an example, authors point out her care for an eleven-year-old girl of Jewish origin, named Zdenka Bienenstock, and for the pregnant women and young mothers who were placed in Đakovo Concentration Camp. The authors also describe the help provided for these women by the so-called "Flying team" of the Osijek Jewish Community. The Conclusion presents the description of Zdenka Bienenstock's return to Osijek, her departure to Israel together with the Grünbaum family, and later, the initiation of the procedure to posthumously recognize Mother M. Amadeja as Righteous among the Nations. This paper was written based on the preserved archival material, the relevant literature, the publications of that period and the written memory of Zdenka Grünbaum Binenstock.
