Sažetak
Globally the reduction of greenhouse gas emission is mandatory in order to prevent hazardous climate change. All sectors including the shipping industry are facing a challenge of curbing emissions. The ratification of Paris agreement has imposed a limit for global average temperature well below 2 °C and preferably limit the increase to 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels. Following this trend, International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set an aim to curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per transport work by at least 40% until 2030 and towards 70% by 2050 in comparison to 2008. Therefore, IMO has introduced several short- term, mid-term, and long-term measures for achieving this aim. One of the important short- term measures is the reduction of speed i.e., slow steaming, which can be easily implemented, and it does not require any additional infrastructure. Since the assumption of cubic relationship between ship speed and daily fuel oil consumption is commonly applied in the shipping industry, it is evident that even small reduction in ship speed will contribute to significant fuel reduction and consequently significant CO2 emission reduction. However, the application of slow steaming increases the voyage time and therefore to keep the transport work constant would lead to an increased number of ships. For that reason, it is necessary to take into account the increase in fuel oil consumption and CO2 emission due to the introduction of additional ships within maritime transport chains. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive review of slow steaming measure and greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential, as well as drawbacks of its application.
