Sažetak
Diminutives are a prominent feature of the child directed speach in Croatian. According to our data, diminutives are acquired early - before the age of 2 - but the first signs of their productive use show latter. First oppositions between the simplex forms and diminutives occur at about the age of 2 ; 2. The observed Croatian child, Antonija, acquired diminutives before other elements of noun morphology, but she did not use diminutives to express smallness. In the recorded material parents used diminutives to create an atmosphere oriented toward the child and the child, at the early age, used them to refer to the objects for which she did not have other words. In this paper diminutives are studied in the spontaneous speech of a Croatian girl (Antonija) between her age of 1 ; 3 and 2 ; 8. The girl and her parents speak Zagreb Štokavian dialect with some dialectal words from Kajkavian.
