Sažetak
We have proposed that the genetic basis of common, late-onset diseases includes a major class of deletorious recessive alleles, on the basis of population genetic arguments. Inbreeding is therefore predicted to increase the incidence of such diseases. We have investigated this in a genetic isolate population showing a wide range of inbreeding. Inbreeding was found to be a significant (positive) predictor for coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, uni/bipolar depression, asthma, gout and peptic ulcer, but not for type 2 diabetes. The results indicated that 23-48% of incidence of these disorders (other than type 2 diabetes) in this population could be attributed to inbreeding.
