AIM: The aim of this study was to determine correlation between anthropometric measurements of the upper, middle and lower third of the face and subjective experience and satisfaction of the participant´s face using the OES questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 72 participants (54 female, 18 male) aged between 21 and 25 years. Extraoral anthropometric measurements of the frontal face were taken from anatomic points Trichion to Nasion for the upper third of the face ; Nasion to Subnasale for middle and Subnasale to Gnathion for lower third. Participants filled up the OES questionnaire about personal satisfaction of their face rating each question from 1 for unsatisfactory to 5 for the most satisfactory. All measurements were done by one examiner three times and arithmetic mean was found for each. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program in order to find correlation between extraoral measurements and three exact questions from the OES questionnaire regarding personal satisfaction of the lower third of the face. Index of disproportion was done separately for middle and lower third of the face in order to make a difference when malocclusion occurs either in the upper or lower jaw leading to disproportion of the facial aesthetics. Normality of the distribution was checked using Shapiro- Wilk’s tests and consequently one way ANOVA was performed with subsequent Bonferroni post hoc analysis. Index of disproportion for both upper and lower jaw was tested using same statistical methods with significance level set at p≦0.05. RESULTS: Results of measurements revealed no statistical significance for the grades obtained by OES questionnaire. Indexes of disproportion however showed that there was a tendency of increase in respect of greater personal satisfaction when facial thirds were more proportional while tendency of decrease was found when facial thirds were showing higher degree of disproportion. CONCLUSION: This study may show that personal experience and satisfaction in facial aesthetics is in consideration with golden proportion but further investigation with more participants is needed. Index of disproportion for both upper and lower jaw showed in this study that more proportional thirds of the face lead to more personal satisfaction in facial aesthetics and this results can be expanded and related with malocclusion in further research.
