Sažetak
Over the years there have been numerous studies focused on the bioactive potential of traditional medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are favourable sources of terpenes and polyphenols with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. To obtain the maximum bioactive potential of the medicinal plants, the most important step is the extraction process. According to literature data, including conventional extraction methods, numerous non-conventional extraction methods have been developed. The efficiency of the extraction process mainly relies upon the extraction conditions and therefore it is crucial to describe the optimal conditions for the selected extraction method. Mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques are extensively used for planning and optimisation of solid-liquid extraction processes of bioactives from medicinal plants. Mathematical models provide valuable insight into mechanisms of solid-liquid extraction of bioactives being the main objective optimisation of the extraction process parameters. In this work, an overview of mathematical modelling approaches in the field of solid-liquid extraction of bioactives applying both conventional and non-conventional extraction methods will be presented. The special focus of this overview will be on the analyses of the solid-liquid extraction dynamics and kinetics.
