Sažetak
The research of planktonic desmids was performed in two karstic lakes. Ponikve Lake (surface area 70 km2, max. depth 6 m, mean depth 2.4 m, catchment area 35 km2) and Njivice Lake (surface area 35 km2, max. depth 9 m, mean depth 4 m, catchment area 20 km2 ) are shallow, alkalic lakes located on the Island Krk (Northern Adriatic). Samples were taken monthly, during 2000 and 2001. Algal composition supplemented by water chemistry and physical data were used to calculate the trophic state index. Ponikve Lake has already become an eutrophic water while Njivice Lake has been slowly changing from a mesotrophic to eutrophic. There were no significant differences in physical and chemical features between lakes. Slight differences were observed in pH values, total phosphorus, ammonia and transparency. Phosphorus and temperature were the most important factors influencing abundance and biomass of desmids. Desmids were also dependent on the competition with other algal groups and zooplankton predation. The highest number of desmid species and abundance were occurred in August (Ponikve Lake), and October (Njivice Lake). Staurastrum and Cosmarium were the dominant genera in both lakes. Among 17 desmids determined in Ponikve Lake dominant species were: Cosmarium moniliforme (Turp.) ex Ralfs and Staurastrum tetracerum var. trigona W. & G.S.West. In Njivice Lake, diversity of desmids was lower, providing 8 species of three genera.
