Sažetak
Sailing as a sport is characterized as a complex sport with great differences between competing classes, environmental conditions on the day of competition and the duration of the regatta. It is extremely difficult for coaches and competitors to prepare for such a variety of conditions in their training, planning and programing. Objective of this study is to establish all factors which ultimately affect success in a particular sailing class. Only papers from academic publications were used, while journal papers dealing with the same issue were not observed. An online search of Pubmed, Web of science, ScienceDirect, Ebsco, Taylor & Francis was conducted covering years from 2001 to 2021. with keywords “sailing”, “sail”, “sailor”, “yacht racing”. With limited number of resources on the subject, the studies that are included range from Olympic classes to “Offshore” classes (solo, duo and team) and consist of variables as anthropometrics, motor abilities, sun exposure, thermoregulation, sleep deprivation, energy intake and expenditure, fluid intake and dehydration, effect of moving platform on the person, mental and physical fatigue, stress and risk. Components of performance efficiency are numerous and specific to boat classes and crew positions. These components are also constantly changing with environment of the sport (Allen, 2006), making any research difficult. The broad range of possible different conditions in preparing, planning and executing affects the sailors mental and physical state. It makes scientific research so difficult and it may be the reason why there is a small number of studies. Developing new innovative ways of recording data and identifying factors that have most impact for given class and conditions on water should be considered as the focus for future studies in sailing.
