Sažetak
Within the early domestic record production in Croatia, from the 1920s onwards, a significant part of the release was devoted to foreign songs, either in translation or in the original language. These songs spread influence on the local popular music industry, not only Croatian but also the wider Yugoslavian, which is still waiting to be explored. By that, the record industry, as crucial for the emergence and development of popular music in general, played a multifaceted role: it transmitted trends from Europe and the world, adapting them to domestic audiences, it represented foreign and domestic performers, transforming the latter into the first music stars. One of the early examples who personifies all these elements is a translator, singer and composer Vlaho Paljetak, one of the main stars of the first Zagreb record factory – “Edison Bell Penkala”. The most important mechanisms and problems of the early domestic music industry can be read from the example of his role within the Croatian record production. This paper will offer an insight into the initial research of the phenomenon of entry and presence of foreign popular music in domestic discography, as part of a research project dedicated to early record industry in Croatia (1927-1960).
