Sažetak
The motivation of patients in orthodontic treatment aim: The purpose of this study was to compare the patient motivation in the beginning and six months into orthodontic treatment with the fixed orthodontic appliance. METHODS: he sample comprised 91 patients (48 female), aged 8 to 17 (median age 13). Patients were recruited to participate in the questionnaire-based study at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. The questionnaires were given to patients at the beginning and 6 months into orthodontic treatment with the fixed orthodontic appliance. The questionnaire comprised 12 items, including demographic data and items about motivation assessed on a 5-point Likert scale. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the data did not follow a normal distribution (p<0.001), therefore, differences in responses to items were tested with the Mann-Whitney U test. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess age and gender as predictors of motivation for orthodontic treatment. The data were analyzed using the STATA software (version 6.1, Texas, USA). RESULTS:Differences in patient motivation at the beginning and at six months of orthodontic treatment were not statistically significant. Female gender and older age were significant predictors of a higher level of motivation (p=0.041 and 0.026, respectively). CONCLUSION:The results of this study indicate that it may be beneficial to postpone orthodontic treatment in less motivated patients. Preadolescents require more motivation during treatment than adolescents. Further longitudinal research is needed to determine the motivational trends of the patients and their parents.
