Sažetak
The dictionary article provides an overview of the literary and theological portrait of Jewish scribes in the New Testament canonical Gospels within the historical context of second temple Judaism. In the first section, a review of recent scholarship on scribes in second temple Judaism is followed by a synthesis of primary evidence from other second temple Jewish corpora showing that there was a broad range of second temple scribes who nevertheless shared a role as the keepers, interpreters and teachers of Israel's scriptures and traditions. In the second section, a description of the literary- theological function of the scribes as a character group is given for each of the four Gospels, and the Greek terms used to depict this vocational group are considered. Scribes in the Gospels are often associated with other Jewish parties, such as the Pharisees, or with the high priesthood in Jerusalem. Each Gospel provides a distinctive portrait of scribes as a group, usually in opposition to Jesus, who is often critical of their hypocrisy. Distinctive is Matthew’s Gospel, which provides a positive view of the scribal office, even indicating the existence of Christian scribes, while yet being highly critical of the Pharisaic scribes.
