Sažetak
Although illusionism is a doctrine with a long tradition in cinema, analytically informed film philosophy and cognitively oriented film theory has proven that it doesn't provide satisfying explanations to the problems of film perception and comprehension, neither of spectators' engagement with cinematic representations. While fully acknowledging arguments of film scholars from the cognitive-analytical provenance, this paper nevertheless opens the closed and dismissed debate in order to explore whether illusionism was properly defined and elaborated within film theory. By redefining and expanding existing taxonomies, this paper includes a much wider set of illusory phenomena not mentioned so far in treatises of the subject, in order to question the validity of previous attempts, to fill the potential gaps and to set out a potentially improved view of the subject. Finally, I argue against the philosophical attacks on perceptual illusionism, and try to prove that cinema as a medium rests on several perceptual illusions and that without them it would not be conceivable.
