Sažetak
Developments induced by human activities make modern way of life much easier, but at the same time causes different ill effects on state and quality of the environment. It particularly refers to transport and industry. Negative impact on environment can be observed in qualitative and quantitative sense. It is manifested as air, water and ground contamination, then in the appearance of noise and vibrations, in negative impact to the whole environment, in taking up green areas, in visual degradation of nature and cities and increased dangerous on human health. Awareness of ecology and efforts of Republic of Croatia to adjust the environmental protection to the international standards have influenced on development of statistics ecology, that is statistical methodology on state, quality and protection of environment. The aim of this paper is showing how to estimate the state of environment and measure adverse effects of human activities by means of statistical analysis. By introduction the pollution index it can be estimated the state and quality of the environment of an each organizational unit (county) in the observed period of time for making appropriate decisions concerning investments in environmental protection. As an example of calculation the total pollution quantity by means of pollution index, data of sulfuric dioxide and smoke emissions in Primorsko-goranska county in period from 1995 to 1999 are used.
