Sažetak
The primary aim of this paper as a part of a planned longitudinal action research of business school students’ climate change awareness and engagement capacity is to explore their attitudes in relation to their future engagement in the working environment with the aim to also debate related teachers’ accountability in the education process in high education institutions. High number of previous research on awareness of young people regarding climate change suggest a whole range of attitudes and reactions on personal and collective levels with not many clear indications of the role of teaching process. The debates and related research is often part of a wider context, particularly in business school where sustainable development is part of the curriculum, but apart from the courses that are dealing with the environmental issues or business ethics, the impression is, there is a silos culture in many high education institutions where teachers are focusing on their own area of expertise and teaching instead of treating the climate change perspective as a strong element of any crisis management. Let alone the fact that a separate crisis management course is not very often to be found in curriculum of business schools in Croatia and beyond in EU. The purpose inspiring the research in this aspect has not so often been to translate knowledge based on results into action in high education institutions where future business leaders are educated and formed. Students might even be highly aware thanks to media and information overload, but they are also likely to ignore the messages. Teachers, on the other hand, sometimes seem to act as if they see no elephant in the room. This research that focuses on the case of an American college and business school with a certain percentage of international and majority of Croatian students, has the purpose to understand this awareness, should there be any, and to debate new challenges it puts in front of teachers. The triangulated methodology includes survey, focus groups and student and peer observation. The paper discusses various levels of awareness of undergraduates to investigate the impact of the overall business school education on student awareness and understanding of their future executive and management roles in the context of climate change.
