Sažetak
This paper analyses the shaping of unionist policy in Croatia from the mid-1860s from the perspective of one of its important protagonists – Ignjat Brlić – based on the correspondence between Croatian politicians Ignjat Brlić and Andrija Torkvat Brlić, and Ignjat's speeches in the Croatian Parliament. During 1866 and 1867, he attempted to set the stage for an agreement with the Hungarians through his contacts with prominent Hungarian politicians (Ferenc Deák, Károly Kerkapoly). In these contacts and during negotiations in Pest as part of the Croatian Regnicolar Deputation, his starting point was Article 1861:42 of the Croatian Parliament and he attempted to ensure an autonomy as broad as possible for the Triune Kingdom in the common state with Hungary. Subsequently, he sharply criticised the policy pursued by the Croatian unionist government. Defending Croatian national interests in his written communication and public speeches, he demonstrated excellent knowledge of parliamentary tradition and institutions of European countries, to which he referred in making his case, and thus contributed to their reception in Croatia.
