Sažetak
Analytical indicators place Europe at the very peak of global tourism development. It is not only the greatest tourist-generating area, but also the most visited of all destinations worldwide. Tourism-related indicators show the European Union to be the leading tourist destination in the world. From the very beginning, tourism has been considered one of the most important branches of the EU economic system. In the future, tourism in the EU is expected to maintain this leading economic role and also to become instrumental in fostering the growth of less-developed regions and in creating jobs for the local population. To make this happen, many old customs and habits have been changing over the years in the EU, and new institutions have been introduced with the intention of improving established tourist services and creating new ones. These institutions can be found in tourist destinations of all sizes. Their tasks, among other things, focus on developing regional tourist destinations, and dealing with a wide array of tourism-related needs required by today’s tourists – ranging from personal problems and health issues, to issues of travelling, crossing borders, and possessing the documentation this requires. Although many comprehensive measures have already been undertaken in developing tourism in the EU, new problems are always emerging requiring new action to be taken. This is because tourism, just like the people it serves, is constantly evolving and creating something new.
