Sažetak
Bubblenucleationandgrowthcontroltheexplosivityofvolcaniceruptions, andthekineticsoftheseprocesses aregenerallydeterminedfromexaminationsofnaturalsamplesandquenchedexperimentalrunproducts. Thesesamples, however, onlyprovideaviewofthe finalstate, fromwhichtheinitialconditionsofatime- evolvingmagmaticsystemaretheninferred.Theinterpretationsthatfollowareinexactduetotheinabilityof determiningtheexactconditionsofnucleationandthepotentialdetachmentofbubblesfromtheirnucleation sites, anuncertaintythatcanobscuretheirnucleationlocation – eitherhomogeneouslywithinthemeltor heterogeneouslyattheinterfacebetweencrystalsandmelts.Wepresentresultsofaseriesofdynamic, real- time4DX-raytomographicmicroscopyexperimentswhereweobservedthedevelopmentofbubblesincrystal bearingsilicatemagmas.Experimentallysynthesizedandesiticglasseswith0.25–0.5wt%H2O andseedsilicate crystalswereheatedat1atmtoinducebubblenucleationandtrackbubblegrowthandmovement.Incontrast to previousstudiesonnaturalandexperimentallyproducedsamples, wefoundthatbubblesreadilynucleated on plagioclaseandclinopyroxenecrystals, thattheircontactanglechangesduringgrowthandthattheycan growtosizesmanytimesthatofthesilicateonwhosesurfacetheyoriginated.Therapidheterogeneous nucleationofbubblesatlowdegreesofsupersaturationinthepresenceofsilicatecrystalsdemonstratesthat silicatescanaffectwhenvesiculationensues, influencing subsequentpermeabilitydevelopmentandeffusive vs. explosivetransitioninvolcaniceruptions.
