Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to contribute to investigations in the History of Philosophy of Sport (PS), and I will concentrate on the events of 1972 that highly influenced the rise and the development of PS. My understanding is that 1972 is a crucial year - the starting point of the discipline as a separate branch of general philosophy - for several reasons. First, I indicate three important developments: 1) in 1972 the first symposiums were held specifically dedicated to sport-philosophy (München and Brockport) and sport-ethics (Brockport and Ontario) ; 2) several influential books were published in 1972, by Gerber, VanderZwaag, Lenk, and Gruppe 3) The Philosophic Society for the Study of Sport (today IAPS) was founded at the end of 1972. Second, I examine and compare different understandings and/or definitions of sport presented in 1972 by Fraleigh, Gerber, Lenk and VanderZwaag. I examine the kind of methodology used and proposed for philosophic inquires in sport and compare it to the present state of the discipline. Finally, I will show that two distinct conceptions of the future of PS were drawn in 1972. I will make a claim and provide rationales that one of them did not have a chance to succeed, while the other one became and remains the default to the present day.
