Sažetak
English and dance go hand in hand, especially when working with young learners. Working with children for about nine years in two different areas (as a teacher of dance and movement and as a teacher of English) both separately and combined, one can safely conclude that children love to be in motion. There are many reasons for using movement in the process of language learning some of which are to be found in this article. EDW is a three-level special course, designed for three to eight-year-old children in which teaching English is combined with the theory of movement and dance education, representing language and dance at the same level and at the same time. Music, movement and dance, being in accordance with the natural development of a child, bring the process of learning closer to children, making it enjoyable, interesting and fun, easy to understand and follow, thus raising children's interest and motivation. Furthermore, movement brings out rhythmical patterns and melody of natural speech, helps children create mental pictures of what they are learning, makes repetition and revision easier and gets children actively involved. On the other hand, language, rhymes, songs and stories provide reasons for movement and dance, making them more understandable and within reach for children. In EDW children very quickly start using actively the acquired linguistic material. Their whole body and mind are active all the time: they have to see, notice, hear, repeat, imitate, act out, move, touch, dance, all at once. EDW includes socializing of children using sound, rhythm, intonation, movement, music, dance, playing games, acting out and, of course, speaking English. It should awaken and develop children’s sense and awareness of the basic expressive qualities of movement and of the possibilities of moving in the space surrounding them. Competence in both English and dance (the theory of movement) is essential for the EDW teacher to be able to connect and interweave language and movement. While being their leader, the model which the children will imitate and follow in their learning as well as in their growing process, the teacher should encourage children to express and develop their own imagination and creativity and use children’s creative mind in class. Now, after four years of existence, EDW has proved to be a very successful course to the satisfaction of the children, their parents and the teacher.
