Sažetak
Digitalization and virtualization of cultural heritage content and museum collections is an important priority for contemporary cultural institutions in the constant struggle to maintain existing and create new audiences for the content they create. Trends in the creation of virtual content that interpret cultural heritage in museum institutions, as well as archaeological sites, cultural monuments and other significant elements of legacy, have a strong foothold and motivation in (digital) communication with local people and in the efforts to put this heritage to work in the tourism industry. The global lockdown caused by COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020 and the resulting inability to communicate directly with potential users further encouraged museums and cultural heritage sites to accelerate the digitization and virtualization of their content. COVID-19 challenges in winter 2020/2021 provided extra motivation for the next step in digitalization processes. This paper aims to identify and systematize the key trends in the digitalization and virtualization of cultural content, with an emphasis on museum institutions and cultural heritage sites, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using analysis and synthesis, the descriptive method, and the study of cultural tourism practices, museum management and cultural heritage management in Eastern Croatia, the paper seeks to detect the key impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the digitalization and communication of culture content in the regional context.
